BURTON, Richard Francis A Plain and Literal Translation of the Arabian Nights' Entertainments, now entituled The Book of the Thousand Nights and a Night . [and:] Supplemental Nights . Benares: Printed by the Kamashastra Society. For Private Subscribers Only, 1885-1888. 16 volumes, 8° (253 x 158mm). Original black cloth gilt, covers with gilt banner and Arabic text [Vol. I-X], and original black cloth, spines and covers decorated and lettered in silver [Vol. XI-XVI], with the publisher's 'Memorandum' broadside loosely inserted, (spine lettering a little faded, 2 vols. chipped at foot of spine). FIRST EDITION of the author's most financially successful book, with the name and date of the copyrighter on title-page versos, in the original binding and with the broadside 'Memorandum' that the work is intended 'only for those that wish to study the peculiarities of Moslem life... a book for men and students.' This invitation, couched as a warning, brought in a flood of orders and cash enough to make Burton comment: 'Now that I know the tastes of England, we need never be without money.' Nichols, 1897. 8° (262 x 171mm). 71 plates engraved from paintings, with captioned tissues. (A few lightly spotted). Original black cloth gilt, cover fully gilt-illustrated, top edges gilt. FIRST EDITION. Burton and the artist became friends in Trieste and over the years discussed a series of paintings for 'Arabian Nights.' Only one was completed before Burton's death, the remainder finished by 1897, published separately and in Nichols's edition that year. Penzer 325-328. Stephen L. WOOD.
