(7 5/16 x 5 in.), seventeenth-century calf over pasteboard, covers decorated in blind with double fillet border, floral tools at corners, central lozenge composed of drawer handle and leaf tools, rebacked, original backstrip preserved, later red morocco lettering-piece, lower cover detached, first quire loose, folding chemise and slipcase (worn), title-leaf repaired, washed and darkened, tiny rust-hole to 2A7 catching 2 letters, 2I1-2 repaired at head and tail of gutter, marginal repairs to 2T1-8 and 2T2-7, 3D3 repaired at gutter slightly affecting text, 3D4 (errata leaf) repaired affecting headpiece ornament and first words of most lines of text, all losses skilfully supplied in ink facsimile, a few other minor marginal tears or repairs, occasional slight dampstaining, a few edges slightly frayed, some soiling at end . FIRST EDITION, woodcut initials, type ornament headpieces. Pforzheimer 119; PMM 120 ("...all the learning of the age as well as its humour--and its pedantry--are there"); STC 4159.
