Circa 1906. This superb rifle has 26" chopper lump blacked steel barrels with file cut spearpoint quarter rib, mounting a deluxe high visibility rear express sight with silver line and a folding 300 yard leaf also with silver line and scope bases. Silver tipped bead front sight on island base. Finely engraved light line engraving over breeches. Top of right barrel engraved "JAMES WOODWARD AND SONS”, Top of left barrel engraved “64 ST. JAMES'S, LONDON, SW" and "MADE OF SIR JOSEPH WHITWORTH'S FLUID PRESSED STEEL", serial numbers on underside of tubes. Also on bottom of tubes are "J.W. & S" for John Woodward and Sons, "A&T" clearly stamp, and "R.H". Barrel flats with London nitro proofs. Rifle serial number matching scope is a classic Skopar B by Voigtlander and Sohn with duplex reticle and engraved with Woodward's name and address. Underlever splinter tip forend with splendid scroll engraving on release and exterior iron, interior iron with serial number, checkering is traditional English flat top pattern. Action flats with "JAMES WOODWARD & SONS", serial number, and London proof. Nicely case colored Woodward “Automatic” action with dolls head extension for extra strength. Sidelock ejector is engraved with tight well executed scrolls, lined scroll borders and gold line cocking indicators. Maker's name on both lockplates. Traditional Woodward arcaded fences. Disc set strikers. Bolted auto safe with “SAFE” in gold. Single mechanical trigger with long tang running to a dark pistol grip cap with single line engraving. English walnut stock with classic drop points behind action, flat top point pattern checkering at wrist, shadowline cheekpiece. Stock oval engraved "FHD", matching case. Silvers style rubber recoil pad with black line spacer. Weight: 11 lbs 5 oz without scope, 12 lbs 6 oz with scope. Housed in a leather case with brass corners with lid stamped "F. H. DOUGLAS / NEW YORK". Red lining with accessories including striker pot with serial number engraved on top with spare strikers, pair turnscrews marked for Woodward, pair snap caps, 2 piece cleaning rod, chamber brush marked for Hawksley, a pullthrough, mop, brushes, Woodward brush, original double trigger conversion provided, Woodward oil, front sight hood, and ebony block. Woodward trade label on lid. CONDITION: Very Good. Left tube with some minor handling marks and a spot of silver as if from rubbing in a case, barrels still retain 90% black. Forend with some minor handling marks. Barrel channel is somewhat discolored due to old oil, likely from resting against barrels. Action with crisp engraving, vibrant case colors. Minor rub mark on trigger guard under opening lever. Stock with some minor handling marks and one somewhat more noticeable rub on cheekpiece, recoil pad has crystallized. Scope is clear but has some detritus internally that may clean. A great big game rifle from this renowned London Best gunmaker!
