The research of this shotgun was conducted using the book "Combat Shotguns" by Bruce Canfield and is covered from pages 127 to 131, specifically with World War II models. This gun has been gone over part by part and even the hand guard has been removed. We offer the following information: the serial range for 1943 to 1944 Trench guns in 940000 to 1036000. The majority of these came in commercial blue finish. Right side of frame is stamped with a "U.S." with Ordnance bomb. Top of the barrel is stamped with Ordnance bomb directly over the PW stamp. Left side of barrel has all the proper markings including "CYL" for cylinder choke. Has your typical walnut round 18 groove forend and pistol grip walnut buttstock (not checkered), fluted comb and lanyard loop in butt. Left side of stock is stamped with crossed cannons but there is no GHD. Buttplate is proper but is a replacement; original probably was broken. There is also a very small "P" behind the pistol grip with no serifs. Bottom of wrist has a small 1" stress crack with two small brass brad repairs. Original hand guard is the large four hole variety with single brass bead front sight and bayonet attachment with sling swivel. As to condition; frame retains approximately 30-40%, balance is brown patina. The exposed area of barrel behind the hand guard is basically grey-brown patina with much more blue under the hand guard. Tube has about 50% original blue. Matching numbers. Forend is excellent. Stock has numerous dings but is excellent as well. Fine clean bore and perfect action. True, legitimate World War II U.S. military Trench gun. Name Value Manufacturer Winchester Model 1897 Serial Number 1003030 Gauge 12 Barrel Length 21" Chamber 2 - 3/4" Length Of Pull Drop at Comb Drop at Heel Internal Bore Diameter Barrel Wall Thickness FFL Status Curio & Relic Choke Cylinder Weight
