Californian Author: Place: Monterey, CA Publisher: Colton & Semple Date: Saturday, October 17, 1846 Description: Vol. I, No. 10. 4 pp. In two columns, on single folded sheet. 30.8x20.8 cm (12¼x8¼"). The tenth issue of California's first newspaper, published by Monterey Alcalde Walter Colton and his friend Robert B. Semple, printed on the well-used Ramage printing press that Agustín V. Zamorano brought from Hawaii to Monterey in 1834. Printed just two months after the first issue came out on August 15, 1846, this third issue contains a number of articles of interest during a seminal period of early California history. Notable is the arrival of Commodore Stockton at Yerba Buena; advice to emigrants on where to shelter during the coming winter months (missions are suggested as a safe refuge); the insurrection by Californios against the Bear Flaggers ("..the ring-leaders are doomed. There is only one resting place for them in California and that is the grave"); word of incoming immigrants ("Not less that two thousand human souls are now in the interior, and within two hundred miles..., winding their way over the rugged mountain's top to 'El Dorado' of the western world...") with as many as 1,000 Mormons headed to California as well. There is also a column about Hawaii, from the Friend, and one with notices from Tahiti. This copy with bold ink signature of Capt. Wm. Mervine, of the U.S.S. Savannah, at top of the first page (slightly shaved). Stitching holes in left margin. Lot Amendments Condition: Old folds, a small tape repair to inside pages, a few spots; very good. Item number: 318707
