Beschreibung:

Caoursin, Gulielmus. Obsidionis Rhodiae urbis descriptio. [Venice: c.1480.] a10, b8. 4to (136 x 182 mm). Modern quarter burgundy over marbled boards, gilt-lettered spine, a.e.g. Internally clean, covers with some shelfwear, else near fine. Fra Gulielmus Caoursin was the vice chancellor of Rhodes during the battle between the Knights of St. John and the substantially larger Turkish forces. This bestseller, which was a recounting of the clash thus far, was intended to incite patrons to financially or materially support the fight to hold this geographical (and symbolic) line between Christianity and Islam. The Knights heroically held the Turks for years before defeat finally forced them to surrender the island and move their order to Malta where they continued as the Knights of Malta. BM Vol.4, p.1169. See illustration.
