CAPTAIN JAMES COOK (1728-1779)
Paris: Barrois (printed overslip to imprint in vol. I); Hotel de Thou, 1778. 6 text volumes, 8° (197 x 124mm), and 4° atlas volume (253 x 200mm). Half-titles in text vols. Folding table in text vol. IV, 66 engraved plates, many folding or double-page. (Minor stain in gutter towards end of atlas vol., latter plates more heavily affected, text vols with occasional faint spotting or browning.) Text vols in contemporary mottled calf, gilt spines, marbled-endpapers, red edges; the atlas vol. in contemporary quarter sheep, the gilt spine almost matching, but not quite uniform, with the text vols, red edges (extremities lightly rubbed). Provenance : Mariette Auriol (19th-century stamps to verso of titles). FRENCH EDITION OF THE OFFICIAL ACCOUNT OF COOK'S SECOND VOYAGE . Two French editions, both translated by Suard, appeared in 1778: one in 5 text vols together with 4° atlas vol. with 65 plates; and the present work in 6 text vols with the atlas vol. containing 66 plates. The importance of the present work lies in the fact that Suard adds passages by Forster not included in his earlier work. Brunet II, 255; Beddie 1224.
