CARRINGTON, John W.]. The Passage of the Isthmus: or, Practical Hints to Persons about to Cross the Isthmus of Panama... By One Who has Recently Crossed . New York: Jennings & Harrison, 1849. 8 o (211 x 129 mm). 14 pages. Folding lithographed frontispiece map of the isthmus by J.A. Lloyd (old tape repairs on verso with some loss of letters on recto, some soiling and creasing). 20th-century red half morocco. Provenance : Thomas W. Streeter (bookplate; his sale part V, Parke Bernet, 23 October 1968, lot 3149; purchased from Briggs, 1929). FIRST EDITION. Carrington (who signs the work with his initials at end) provides the reader with "hints" for the crossing of the Isthmus of Panama, including locations for resupply, navigational observations and notes on the local population. As for carrying firearms, he recommends leaving them well hidden, as they are not more wanted than "a toad has need of a caudicular extension of the dorsal vertebrae" (p.13). Carrington fills his description with such witticisms. According to American Book Prices Current , this was the last copy sold at auction, when it was sold in the Thomas W. Streeter sale in 1968. Sabin 11060; Streeter sale V:3149 (this copy).
