CARSTAIRS, JOE] Archive of photographs depicting Carstairs' early speedboat racing ventures and other related nautical images , comprising approximately fifty photographs, including rare vintage photographs from the late 1920s and 1930s such Carstairs on the deck of the Sonia II in 1932 and racing in Newg (named for the actress and Carstairs paramour Gwen Foster), Carstairs in a speedboat with two engineers, one early image of engineers repairing a heavily damaged speedboat, some contemporary news clippings of Carstairs exploits, images of Carstairs and others posing with trophy fish, miscellaneous early portraits of Carstairs, various images of sailboats, a large photograph of Carstairs wearing a Royal Thames Yacht Club cap, lastly is a group of photographs of the racing trophies that Carstairs donated to the National Motorboat Museum at Pitsea in 1989; Together with a 1954 marlin fishing trophy and Carstairs signed 1948 pilots license and photographs relating to her seaplane, including one 1944 photograph inscribed by Carstairs "To Butch from Joe/"He taught me to fly!" The whole somewhat handled, occasional creases, some mounted, others with remnants of former mounting to versos. An important pioneer of hydroplane racing, Joe Carstairs was legendary in her day for the design of her speedboats on which she spared no expense and which she raced herself, narrowly escaping death on many occasions. Shunning animals, Carstairs greatly favored the modern speed of motorboats, fast cars, and seaplanes and seemed to embody the spirit of the futurist era. Her gender, as well as the masculine clothing she favored, made her an international sensation and she encouraged the great rivalries which developed with male competitors with each appearance, especially at the legendary Harmsworth Cup. As described by Kate Summerscale, "Racing a motorboat was a felt battle, a collision between sea and machine ... In her boat, Carstairs could live even harder and faster than she did on land" (p. 69). Provenance: The Collection of Marion B. 'Joe' Carstairs (1900-1993) C Estate of Jacqueline F. Rae
