Venice: Vincentio Valgrisi, 1571. 4 o (208 x 149 mm). Valgrisi's woodcut serpent device on the title, 88 full-page engravings by Bolognino Zaltieri (Repaired tear crossing imprint on title, small hole within image on Ff3.) FIRST ILLUSTRATED EDITION, Valgrisi issue. In the new dedication to this edition, Cartari states that the plates are by Bolognino Zaltieri R.L. McGrath has traced several of Zaltieri's illustrations to those in other sixteenth-century works, and accuses him of a purely literary approach to art, picturing gods from the textual description without seeking antique representations (quoted in Mortimer). The publication was shared by Valgrisi and Francesco Ziletti, differing only in the setting of the title. Adams C-788; Brunet I:1601; Mortimer Italian 108.
