CASSIN, JOHN. 1813-1869. Illustrations of the Birds of California, Texas, Oregon, British and Russian America. Philadelphia: J.B. Lippincott, 1856. 8vo (258 x 172 mm). 50 hand-colored lithographed plates by William E. Hitchcock, the first 20 after George G. White. Rebacked retaining original half brown morocco and marbled boards, original gilt-lettered and ruled spine laid down. Edgewear to covers, scattered foxing and toning. FIRST EDITION. 0ne of the cornerstones of American ornithological literature, first issued in 10 parts with the preface, contents and index appearing in this first full edition of 1856. As set forth in the preface, the work was "to be regarded in some measure as an addition to the works of former authors in American Ornithology, but at the same time complete in itself."
