CASTEL DE SAINT-PIERRE, Charles Irénée (1658-1743)]. Projet pour rendre la Paix perpétuelle en Europe . Utrecht: Anton Schouten, 1713-1717. Three volumes, 8° (162 x 90mm). Engraved portrait by J.B. Scotin le jeune, titles printed in red and black, engraved vignette on that of vol.I & II, 3 engraved portrait by Scotin and folding plate (slightly torn) in vol.III, final errata in vol.I, final errata and list of plates in vol.III. (A few leaves slightly browned, a few with waterstains, mainly in lower outer corner.) Contemporary calf, spines gilt in compartments with red and black lettering pieces (slightly rubbed). Provenance : Hector Raussin (signature on titles); College Monspel (booklabel). EXTREMELY RARE FIRST EDITION of the author's aims for peace in Europe, which included his theories on sovereignty, law and liberty, which influenced Rousseau and Kant. He advocates the status quo, of unmovable boundaries of states, and of freedom of trade. Goldsmith 5071. (3)
