Title: Certificate for ten shares in the North American Land Company, signed by Morris as President of the company, made out to John Barker Church Author: Morris, Robert, Signer from Pennsylvania Place: Philadelphia Publisher: Date: May 8, 1795 Description: Engraved certificate filled out in ink, signed by James Marshall as secretary in addition to Morris. Indentured at left margin; uncancelled. 24.5x32 cm (9¾x12½"), framed with portrait under plexiglass. Overall 41x66 cm (16x26"). Robert Morris 1734-1806, a signer of the Declaration of Independence and the "Financier of the Revolution," was in the final year of his term as U.S. senator from Pennsylvania when he signed this certificate selling shares in one of his land speculation schemes. The financial sleight-of-hand which served him so well managing the slender assets of the Revolutionary government eventually led to his downfall, as such enterprises as the North American Land Company proved disastrous, and he was imprisoned for indebtedness from 1798-1801. Lot Amendments Condition: Slight foxing, very good. Item number: 252245
