Milan: Heredero de Pedromartir Locarni and Juan Bautista Bidello, 1610. 8 o (140 x 92 mm). Engraved initials and head-pieces. (Title-page with small hole, a corner renewed affecting letterpress and slightly soiled, marginal worm holes particularly to gatherings X and Y, generally some browning and staining.) 19th-century vellum over boards. Provenance : Libri di Gio Rossi (ink stamp on title-page); Hispanic Society of America (bookplates). "ONE OF THOSE UNIVERSAL WORKS WHICH ARE READ BY ALL AGES AT ALL TIMES" ( PMM ). First edition published in Italy, of the first part of Don Quixote , following the text of the second Juan de la Cuesta edition, Madrid, 1605. An instant success, the first edition, published at Madrid in 1605, was followed in the same year by 3 pirated editions and two further authorised editions. The first part of Don Quixote was revised by Cervantes up to and including the third Cuesta edition of 1608, the second part was not published until 1615. Palau 51883.
