CERVANTES SAAVEDRA, Miguel de (1547-1616). El Ingenioso Hidalgo Don Quixote de la Mancha, Compuesto por Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra. Dirigido al Duque de Beiar, Marques de Gibraleon, Conde de Barcelona, u Bañares, Vizconde de la Puebla de Alcozer, Señor de vaillas de Capilla, Curiel, y Burgillos . Madrid: Juan de la Cuesta, Volume I Con privilegio de Castilla, Aragon, y Portugal, 1605; Volume II Con privilegio, 1615. 2 volumes, small 4° in eights, (185 x 133mm.). Woodcut arms on titles, woodcut initials and headpieces, final imprint leaf in volume II. (A8-B4 and Ff1 in volume I and ?2 and X1.8 in volume II with minor paper flaws and holes, tear in Z1 touching upper two lines repaired, old waterstains towards lower margins in both volumes, with some subsequent discolouration, S6 in volume I and S2-5 in volume II with stains, upper margins in volume II trimmed occasionally touching headline, final two gatherings in volume II with inner margin restored.) Late 19th-century vellum. Provenance : Wm. Robinson (signature dated 1822 on verso of title of volume II). FIRST EDITION of volume II, second Madrid edition of volume I with the addition of Aragon and Portugal in the privilege. The second Madrid edition has the pagination apparently corrected, although other errors were introduced; however, the text is more correct and complete, and includes the description of the theft of Sancho's grey, which was deficient in the first edition. It was this text that was the basis of all successive editions. The addition of Portugal in the privilege was in reaction to the pirated Lisbon edition of Jorge Rodriguez. Palau 51977; 51985. (2)
