CHAMPOLLION, Jean-François-(1792-1832). Notice sur le papyrus hiératique et les peintures du cerceuil de Pétaménoph . Paris: Imprimerie Royale, 1827. 8° (215 x 135mm). One engraved plate. Original blue-grey wrappers (detached and split at spine, wear at extremities). Provenance : Jean-François-Champollion (inscription 'de la part de l'auteur' in black ink on upper wrapper, to:) -- 'M. [Costanzo] Gazzera'. FIRST EDITION, PRESENTATION COPY FROM THE AUTHOR TO COSTANZO GAZZERA, philologist, professor of philosophy and librarian at the University of Turin, and secretary of the Academy of Sciences in Turin. Champollion and Gazzera had maintained a correspondence since 1819, and first met on the occasion of Champollion's visit to the Egyptian Gallery in Turin. Gazzera worked very closely with Champollion and was known familiarly as his aide-de-camp, assisting him in his extensive, 9 month-long examination of the famous collection. Gazzera's secured Champollion's membership in the Turin Academy of Sciences, an honour which had been denied Champollion in his own country by the Académie Française. Apparently an offprint for Champollion, extracted from Cailliaud's Voyage à Méroé (1826). Rare: not in Brunet; COPAC locates no copy in the UK; the Catalogue collectif de France locates only 4 copies. Faure, Champollion. Le savant déchiffré , 2004.
