Charles Émile Jacque (Paris 1813 - 1894) Shepherdess with her flock at the edge of the forest Signed l.r. Oil on canvas, 82.2 x 66.1 cm N.B.: The French artist Charles Émile Jacque left the cholera infested Paris in 1849 to settle in Barbizon, together with Jean-François Millet (1814-1874). As one of the leading members of the School of Barbizon, Jacque's preference was for rustic and pastoral scenes, in which shepherds and their flock were often the main subject matter.
