CHARLES II (King of England, 1660-1685). Letter signed to Viscount Campden, Whitehall, 1 February 1665/6 , addressing his correspondent as Lord Lieutenant of Rutland, on the raising of the tax for the Dutch war, enjoining him to do his utmost to promote 'subscripcon & payment into the Excheq r of further loans of money within our County of Rutland upon the credit of the said Act' and promising repayment of both principal and interest, signed by the King at the head, and by the Earl of Arlington at the foot, 1½ pages, folio, integral address leaf (small piece torn away from blank area), traces of seal . PRIVY COUNCIL letter signed by Finch (Lord Chancellor), Danby (Lord Treasurer), and 11 others, addressed to Lord Campden, Whitehall, 30 September 1678 , referring to a 'Dangerous Conspiracy' and requiring him to have all Papists' houses searched and their arms confiscated, one page, folio, integral address leaf . Preparations for the Dutch war had begun in 1665, and in October Parliament had passed a patriotic address authorising a large supply to be devoted to the war. Arlington was the principal person concerned with foreign affairs in the government. The Privy Council letter refers to the Popish Plot. (2)
