Two letters signed ('Carolus') to Antoniotto Adorno, Doge of Venice, the first, Valladolid, 4 February 1523, in Latin , referring to French ambitions in Italy, announcing that he has sent the lawyer Wolfgang Prantner to Switzerland to negotiate a treaty for the defence of Italy, mentioning the money assigned for this purpose and the need for care to prevent the enemy from taking the offensive, also asking him to receive Wolfgang, and hoping for victory, one page, 2° (315 x 295mm.) , address and paper seal on verso (a few small holes, slightly discoloured); the second, Toledo, 15 December 1525, in Spanish , recommending Pelegrino de Montenegro for his services as secretary to his ambassador, the Count of Padua, and requesting that he be treated with all respect, one page, 2° (305 x 210mm.) , address and papered seal on verso. Antoniotto Adorno was the most illustrious member of a distinguished Genoese family, several members of which were elected Doge. Before his triumph at Pavia in 1525 Charles V was much preoccupied with Francis I's designs on Italy. The treaty negotiations to which the first letter refers culminated in the alliance of the Emperor, Pope Leo X, and the city states of Milan, Venice, Florence, Sienna, Lucca and Genoa against all disturbers of the peace in Italy, and the agreement with the Swiss secured the neutralisation of Franche Comté.
