LA MONDOTTE Count Stephan von Neipperg intended to merge La Mondotte with his grand cru classé château Canon-La-Gaffeliere when he purchased the châteaux in the early 1990's. When permission was denied, the count vowed to create a wine that would rival the very best of Saint-Emilion. In an appellation that is fertile ground for garagiste winemaking, Count von Neipperg spared no expenses on creating this luscious wine. The hedonistic, super ripe juice is created with careful attention. Yields are resticted to 30 hl/ha - similar to right-bank cohort Petrus and the wine undergoes malo in barrel before 12-18 months new oak maturation. Some would describe the intense, inky wine as almost port-like in some vintages, likening it more perhaps to a Screaming Eagle of Bordeaux than common comparisons to Le Pin or Petrus. In fact, the intense Merlot is matched by some about 25 percent Cabernet Franc grown on the steep vineyard slopes. The approximately ten hectare parcel of land is located east of the limestone plateau famous in Saint-Emilion. The clay and silt topsoils cover a rocky subsoil that provides excellent drainage and forces the vines' roots to dig deeply in search of water and minerals. The wine has been met by accolades by many critics, particularly by Robert Parker since Neipperg's first successful vintage in 1996. DVR Château La Mondotte--Vintage 1996 Saint-Emilion All lots in original wooden cases Parcel: lots 1129-1131 and 1132-1135 "An amazing wine, the 1996 La Mondotte (approximately 800 cases made from a 30-year old parcel of 100 Merlot planted on a hillside between Le Tertre-Roteboeuf and Canon La Gaffeliere) is a super-star. It is amazing for both its appellation and the vintage, revealing a remarkable level of richness, profound concentration, and integrated tannin. The thick purple color suggests a wine of extraordinary extract and richness. This super-concentrated wine offers a spectacular nose of roasted coffee, licorice, blueberries, and black currants intermixed with smoky new oak. It possesses full body, a multidimensional, layered personality with extraordinary depth of fruit, a seamless texture, amazing viscosity, and a long, 45-second finish. The tannin is sweet and well-integrated. This blockbuster St.-Emilion should be at its best between 2006-2025." Robert Parker Wine Advocate #122 (Apr 1999) 6 magnums per lot
