Château Margaux--Vintage 1961
7 bottles per lot
1961: A 5 Star Vintage A great vintage often compared to the 1945 for the two have several things in common. First of all, nature did the pruning: frosts severely reducing the potential crop in 1945 and heavy rain washing away the pollen in 1961. Though there was persistent rain in July, there was a drought in August, followed by a very sunny September, which resulted in a harvest of small, thick skinned well-nourished grapes in turn producing deeply colored, rip but concentrated and tannic wines. Opinions very, some sure of the 61's superiority, some-as I do-considering the 45's greater. The risk is that the tannin will outlive the fruit. Nevertheless some fabulous wines were made. MB Vintage Wine Château Margaux--Vintage 1961 Margaux, 1er cru classé Levels: one top and six upper/mid shoulder; lightly bin soiled label, one damp stained label, one slightly protruding cork "An intense bouquet filled with the scents of ripe plums, flowers, toasted walnuts, and oak is divine. This expansive wine is silky, rich, very generously flavored, long, and full bodied on the palate. It is fully mature, but there is little chance of this wine falling apart for at least another decade. I have high hopes that the 1982, 1983, and 1986 will ultimately surpass this vintage of Margaux. The 1961 is a top-flight wine and unquestionably the last great Margaux until the Mentzelopoulos era began its remarkable string of great Margaux in 1978." Robert Parker Bordeaux Book 3rd Edition (Jan 1998) 7 bottles per lot
