Chateau Petrus 1947 Chateau Petrus 1947 Pomerol, Cru Exceptionnel u. ts, good color and clarity, nicked label, otherwise good appearance In 2009, I had this again, from our own cellar and for my birthday. It had spent all its life in two very cold cellars and so it had a great level and a film-like deposit on the side of the bottle. Completely deep, dark colour to the rim. The most intoxicating, chocolate liqueur nose, all opulence and luscious blackberries turning to black cherries. An unbelievable sweet candied violets taste. No sign of any physical decline, or volatility. Glorious flavours of a compote of plums. We decanted it half an hour before drinking and, after 40 minutes in the glass, it had a bouquet of sandalwood. What tremendous impact - the most decisive Claret ever. I felt I had never tasted a more exciting wine than this bottle - Mouton 1945 is the 'classic', but this is the most deliriously fantastic. Serena Sutcliffe, MW Lot 367 1 bt (sc) per lot: HKD 20000-40000 per lot: USD 2500-5000 The very word Petrus creates a "frisson" unlike any other wine name - and the liquid in the glass induces a dream-like silence as its enormous, almost roasted flavour envelops the palate. The sheer exoticism of this revered vineyard, where clay combines with Merlot to make something wildly heady, needs to be experienced by everyone once in their life (preferably many more times!). Petrus does not taste like other Bordeaux - it is not "classic" but stupendously original, full of oriental spice box flavours which unfold endlessly. A one-off wine that inhabits a world of its own and, of course, a rarity due to its small (11.4 hectare) size. Serena Sutcliffe, MW Quantity: 1
