CHÉREAU, François II (1717–1755)
Receuil de Marines et de Vaisseaux. Paris: F. Chéreau, 1754.
A unique ensemble of maritime prints, formed in the mid 18th-century for the Parisian connoisseur market and preserved in a binding of appropriate grandeur by Padeloup. The earliest plates are the remarkable etchings after Bruegel and Hollar. The 6 Bruegel plates are in mixed states as follows: B. 105 and 107 in the first of two states, B. 102 in the only state, B.101 in the second and final state, B. 104 and B. 103 state uncertain as trimmed to the image, while three of the plates have the small Jug with Flower watermark. However, the many grand plates dating from the later 17th century form the main body of the collection, often uniting maritime and topographical themes to striking effect. Gudenus's monumental views of Istanbul are just one of many fine renderings of ports and harbours, and the impressive dimensions of many plates, combined with a uniformly-high quality of impression, make this an album of the greatest distinction.
Folio (626 x 465mm). A collection of 143 engraved maritime plates, preceded by the above manuscript title. Many plates window-mounted. Among the suites included are: PASSEBON, Henri Sbonski de. Plan de Plusieurs Bâtimens de Mer. [Marseilles: c. 1690]. Engraved frontispiece by Simoneau, and 17 double-page plates (356 x 267mm.) by and after Claude Randon, the last by Barthélemy Chasse – [Views of English Ships]. London: c. 1750. Suite of 10 plates (318 x 458 and 222 x 354mm) by Paul Fourdrinier, G. Scotin, W.H. Toms, G. Bickham the younger – DESCAMPS, Jean-Baptiste. [Relation de l'arrivé du Roy au Havre de Grâce]. Paris: 1751-1753. Suite of 6 double-page plates (510 x 650mm.) by J.-P. Le Bas – GARREAU, P. father and son. [Views of La Rochelle]. Paris: les auteurs, 1749-1750. 3 double-page plates (300 x 850mm) by J.-P. Le Bas – GUDENUS, baron François-Philippe de. [Views of Constantinople.] Paris: [1740]. Suite of 3 panoramic plates (450 x 1850mm) by P.-J. Duret under the direction of J.-P. Le Bas – LIGHTBODY, James. [Views of Portsmouth, Plymouth and Harwich]. London: Thomas Taylor [c. 1710]. Suite of 3 plates (485 x 600mm) by H. Hulsbergh – BASTIDE, J.H. and C. LEMPRIERE. [Views of Jersey, Guernesey and Alderney]. Suite of 8 plates, 3 double-page (320 x 680 and 320 x 470mm.) by William Henry Toms – BURFORD, Thomas and Willem VANDERVELD. [Engagements and storms on the high seas.] Suite of 6 mezzotints (250 x 360 and 240 x 310mm.) by Burford, E. Kirkall and Willson – RIGAUD, Jacques. [Naval vessels and galleys]. Paris: Duchange et l'auteur, [n.d.]. Two numbered suites, each of six plates (180 x 330 and 190 x 330mm.) by and after Rigaud – BRUEGEL the elder, Pieter. [Ships of War.] Suite of 6 etched plates (215 x 285mm.) by Frans Huys and H. Cock. Hollstein Dutch and Flemish, III, pp. 262-264, nos. 101, 102, 104, 105, 103, 107 – HOLLAR, Wenceslas.
