An album of finely-cut scissor silhouettes, 1829-1837, thirty-five paper silhouettes on green, blue or black paper, mostly dated in contemporary manuscript and initialled 'E.M' on verso, two additional inscribed with place name of Brixton, depicting landscapes, figures, and animals, including camels, monastery ruins, a man on a gibbet and a goat hanging from a tree, a reindeer pulling a sleigh beside fir trees, a windmill and a figure with a sack, children in a garden beside a Greek temple, natives with spears beside a house on stilts, a dog sleigh, sheep herders, and a woman mourning at a tomb under a spreading tree, some creasing and occasional very minor damage, approximately 10 x 17cm (4 x 6.75ins) and smaller, loosely inserted between album leaves, all edges gilt, original embossed black morocco with silver metal clasp, rubbed, joints splitting and frayed at head, 1.5" loss at foot of spine, and binding becoming detached at upper hinge, 4to These silhouettes are some of the most intricately cut that we have seen, as well as some of the most interesting in terms of subject matter.
