Title: Chinese-American recipes by Japanese-American companies Author: Place: Publisher: Date: 1928-46 Description: Includes: Fuji 30 Favorite Recipes (Fuji Trading Co.Chicago [ca. 1932]) Original color lithograph wrappers, with elaborate color illustrations throughout. 3 x 6”, 15pp.• Oriental “Show-You” Recipes (Oriental Show-You Co., Columbia City, Indiana, ca. 1928) 4½x7", 24pp. Few small line illustrations Oriental Recipes, another edition of the above (ca. 1932) with identical text, but in Art Deco style wrappers Oriental Recipes, another edition (dated 1946) with same style wrappers as the above, but with completely different text and illustrations Several Japanese-American companies were among the first to market Soy Sauce in America. Fuji was one of these, calling their product Sho-Yu Chop Suey Sauce, as complement to the Chinese products they also offered - Bean Sprouts, Chop Suey Vegetables, Chow Mein Noodles, Bamboo Shoots and Water Chestnuts. Though the front cover illustration is distinctively Japanese, this rare little booklet stresses Chinese cuisine, far better known, at the time, within the United States. WorldCat (which locates only 1 library holding in the US) classifies this under both Chinese and Japanese Cookery; as such, it is probably the first successor to the Bosse-Watana cookbook of 1914. Like Fuji, the Oriental Show-You Company was another early Japanese-American marketer of soy sauce. The Indiana firm, which started in Michigan in 1914, was bought out by Beatrice Foods in 1962. It also offered Chinese Chop Suey, Bean Sprouts and Chow Mein Noodles, though in their booklet,s Japanese-style cooking was more clearly stressed. Lot Amendments Condition: Very good.
