A collection of 83 photographs of China from Liángyǒu ("The Young Companion"), gelatin silver prints, most roughly 388 x 289 mm, mounted on paper, exhibition label tipped to lower corner of matte, (translated) "Liang You National traveling photography exhibition," 11 mounted on card and trimmed to edge, label to verso indicating a year of 1933, some chipping and staining to mounts. An agent of modernity, the Chinese culture magazine Liángyǒu (or Liang You) ("The Young Companion") exerted a profound influence on Shanghai and Chinese culture during a pivotal moment in Chinese history. Focusing attention on the arts, including but not limited to photography, Liángyǒu ran from from 1926-1945, and was arguably the most influential Chinese periodical in history, graphically and culturally. This fine collection of 83 photographs stems from a touring exhibition of 1933, and represents a fine cross-section of the work.
