CHRISTIAN, Fletcher, Master's Mate on the H.M.S. "Bounty" (fl. 1789)]. CAESAR. Commentary of His War in Gaul . Edited by Martin Bladen. London, n.d. [1770s?]. 8 , 193 x 122mm. 10 engraved plates, 9 of which folding. (An imperfect copy, lacking A1 titlepage and some 20 leaves at end, some headlines cropped, minor stains). Contemporary half sheep (worn, lacks spine label). FLETCHER CHRISTIAN'S COPY, boldly signed in full: ("Fletcher Christian") at the head of p.xix (opening of The Life of Caesar). A BOOK WHICH BELONGED TO FLETCHER CHRISTIAN, LEADER OF THE MUTINEERS OF THE H.M.S. BOUNTY Christian's bold signature is identical to examples on various surviving documents relating to his naval career. He is known to history only for his final sailing voyage, the ill-starred Polynesian expedition of the H.M.S. Bounty under Captain William Bligh to Tahiti, which erupted in mutiny in April 1789. Christian, about whose earlier life little is known, was one of the Master's mates but became the leader of the mutineers, who eventually cast Bligh and 18 loyal crew-members adrift in a long-boat, then sailed the commandeered vessel to remote Pitcairn Island, where they founded a settlement. Documents of any sort signed by Christian are extremely rare. Since 1975 the sale of only three examples--all fragmentary documents from ship's records-- are recorded by ABPC. Sold as an association copy, not subject to return.
