CHRISTIE, Agatha. Ten Little Niggers . London: Collins for The Crime Club, [1939]. 8 o. 2-page publisher's advertisement at end. Original cloth (leaned, soiled, spine faded). Provenance : S.R.K. Glanwith (ownership signature on front free endpaper). FIRST EDITION, PRESENTATION COPY, inscribed and signed by the author on the front free endpaper: "For leisure moments (if any!) Agatha Christie April 23 r d 1941". While the reading could be leisurely, Christie herself struggled immmensely with this book's intricate plot: "[it] was well received and reviewed, but the person who was really pleased with it was myself, for I knew better than any critic how difficult it had been." ( Autobiography , 1977). The American title is And Then There Were None . [ With ]: Typed letter signed ("Agatha Christie") to Mr. and Mrs. Searle, Winterbrook House, Wallingford, Berkshire, 24 July 1959. 1 page, small 4to , very light browning to edges, with one manuscript correction. Christie politely declines to send a photograph: "I have always felt that there is really no point in seeing what authors, composers or painters look like!" and deplores the use of author photographs on books.
