A collection of letters to the Mayor of Colchester about arrangements for the Colchester Oyster Feast, June-October 1951, from politicians, writers, composers, musicians and others, including: Sir Winston CHURCHILL Letter signed ('Winston S. Churchill'), 28 Hyde Park Gate, 30 June 1951, pleading 'Parliamentary and other commitments' as an excuse for not attending the oyster feast, but hoping to come on another occasion to receive the Honorary Freedom of the Borough, one page, 4to ; Dwight D. EISENHOWER. Letter signed, Supreme Headquarters, Allied Powers Europe, 4 June 1951, declining with regret 'as it would have given me an opportunity of thanking Colchester for all it did for American soldiers and airmen during the war', one page, 4to ; B.L. MONTGOMERY. Two autograph letters signed and a letter signed, 20 August - 26 October 1951, at first accepting and proposing arrangements with typical efficiency, later 'much distressed' at having decline, but 'my first duty is to SHAPE and to General Eisenhower'; also including letters signed by T.S. ELIOT (3 letters, including one cancelling his acceptance because the Feast clashes with 'the first presentation in London of my film, Murder in the Cathedral ', the date of which has been selected by the Queen, and 'it is obviously my duty to regard it as a royal command that I should be present', together 3 pages, 4to ), Henry MOORE (declining, although 'I know, of course, of this historic function, having lived at Colchester at one part of my life'), and others, including musical figures (Ralph Vaughan Williams, William Walton Sir John Barbirolli, Sir Malcolm Sargent, Adrian Boult (3)), figures of the stage (Dame Ninette de Valois (2) and Sir Ralph Richardson (2)), writers (Osbert Sitwell (ALS), Harold Nicolson (2) and David Cecil (2)) and political figures (Lord Mountbatten of Burma, R.A. Butler); approximately 53 letters in total . Arrangements for the Oyster Feast were complicated in 1951 by the clash between the original date of 25 October and the General Election; it was re-scheduled for 9 November. (53)
