"HE IS CAPABLE & INTELLIGENT MAN, TRUSTWORTHY, CIVIL-SPOKEN & SOBER" An early Churchill letter of recommendation for one of his men: "Sergeant Halloway has been in my squadron for four years. He is a capable & intelligent man, trustworthy, civil-spoken & sober. I am very glad to give him a good character." Churchill's posting to Bangalore, India with the 4th Hussars was his first stint of military service after graduating from Sandhurst. He did not plan to be in uniform long. Already he was looking to follow his father into Parliament and to high office. "A few months in South Africa would earn me the S.A. medal and in all probability the Company's star," he reported to his mother. "Thence hot-foot to Egypt--to return with two more decorations in a year or two--and beat my sword into an iron despatch box" (Churchill and Gilbert, Companion, vol. 1, pt 2, p. 676). He returned to England in the spring of 1899, but before year's end he would be in South Africa, this time as a fighting war correspondent for the Morning Post . There Churchill made a daring escape from a Boer POW camp, an exploit that carried him into Parliament in 1900. The dispatch boxes were not far behind.
