CHURCHILL, Winston S.] Group of five black and white press photographs, unsigned, by Fox Photos Ltd. (stamp on versos), April 1955. 9¾ x 7 5/8in. CHURCHILL GREETS A YOUNG QUEEN ELIZABETH AND PRINCE PHILIP AT 10 DOWNING STREET, FOR HIS FAREWELL DINNER AS PRIME MINISTER In April 1955, the 28-year old Queen Elizabeth broke with tradition and became the first monarch to ever visit 10 Downing St. The occasion was extraordinary: Churchill's retirement from his second premiership, and from a public career that began--as Churchill told Elizabeth that evening--under the reign of her great-grandfather Edward VI. Four of the five photos in this lot capture this historic and poignant encounter. A resplendent Churchill and Clementine greet the royal couple at the door, and see them out at the evening's end. Many years later the Queen would comment that she enjoyed her weekly audiences with Churchill above all of the Prime Ministers she had known, "because he was so much fun." (5)
