Half-tone frontispiece portrait. 15 plates, one folding engraved map, several maps in the text. (One plate almost detached). Original mauve cloth, dust-jacket. PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED TO SERGEANT HENRY WILLIAM STEELE IN REFERENCE TO THE CELEBRATED CAVALRY CHARGE AT THE BATTLE OF OMDURMAN on 2 September 1898. The inscription on the front endpaper reads: 'To Sergeant William Henry Steele from Winston S. Churchill June 1940 Omdurman Sept. 2 1898'. The linking of the dates in the inscription suggests that Sergeant Steele may have played some role in the Sudan war. cf. Woods A37(a).
