CHURCHILL, Winston S. The River War . Edited by F. Rhodes. London, New York and Bombay: Longmans, Green, and Co., 1902.
CHURCHILL, Winston S. The River War . Edited by F. Rhodes. London, New York and Bombay: Longmans, Green, and Co., 1902. 8° (221 x 147mm). Half-title. Frontispiece portrait, maps. Original pictorial red cloth gilt, partly uncut and partly unopened. New and revised edition, PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED BY CHURCHILL TO EDDIE MARSH on half title: 'Eddie from Winston S. Churchill Cairo 6 Jan 1908'. Provenance : Sotheby's, 19 July 1994, lot 356. The River War is Churchill's account of the reconquest of the Sudan (see lots 10-11 for his personal experiences of the campaign). Previously an obscure clerk in the West African Department, though well known to a number of influential women in Churchill's circle, Edward Howard Marsh (1872-1953) was chosen by Churchill as his Private Secretary for his very first ministerial appointment, at the Colonial Office in 1905, and was to accompany him in every change of office until Marsh's retirement 30 years later, reverting to the Colonial Office whenever Churchill was out of office. He was arguably the closest and most constant of all Churchill's political collaborators.
