CHURCHILL, Winston S. Typed letter signed ("Winston S. Churchill"), AS PRIME MINISTER, to Alfred Duff Cooper, 23 February 1942. 1 page, 4to, Prime Minister Stationery, punch hole and paperclip burn top left corner . DISASTER AT SINGAPORE hangs like a dark cloud over Duff Cooper's career eight days after Britain's capitulation on 15 February 1942. Here Churchill holds him back from attempting a public rehabilitation: "On careful consideration I do not think tomorrow would be a good opportunity for you to deliver the speech you have in mind and which I put you to the trouble of composing. I do not think it would be helpful to your position because through no fault of your own it leads up by every path to events of a disagreeable character. Better opportunities will come, and I shall be on the lookout for them." In the autumn of 1941 Churchill sent Duff Cooper to Singapore as resident Cabinet minister for Far Eastern affairs and he returned home to round abuse as the public scapegoated him for the humiliating defeat. Not until December 1943 did political passions cool sufficiently for Churchill to name him ambassador to the Free French in Algiers.
