CICOGNA, Giovanni Matteo (XVI secolo) - Il primo libro del Trattato militare. Venice: Bariletto, 1567. First edition of this treatise on military strategy written by Giovanni Cicogna, an historiographer and soldier from Verona. The work contains numerous woodcut illustrations of military strategy and battle tactics. 4to (206 x 145mm). Woodcut device on title and final leaf, woodcut portrait on verso of title, numerous woodcut illustrations, some full-page, the dedicatee Ottavio Farnese coat of arms at beginning of text and historiated woodcut initials (first leaves with wormtrack to inner margin, occasional browning and spotting, a few stains). Contemporary limp vellum, shelf-mark label on spine (occasional wormholes, stained and rubbed). Provenance: Ink shelf-mark on title - Domus Prob. Prov. Veneto Med. S.J. (stamp on title) - Christie's sale of 2013, n. 9702, lot 296.
