Circle of Jacob Ferdinand Voet (Antwerp 1639-89)"Portrait of Cardinal Federico II Borromeo, half-length, seated," O.O.C., 72cms x 58cms (28 1/2" x 23"). Petrucci, Ferdinand Voet detto Ferdinando de Ritratti, Rome 2005, p.150, Catalogue No. 40BThis portrait is a workshop replica of Voet's original in the Silvano Lodi Gallery in Milan.Federico Borromeo (1564-1631) was made a Cardinal by Pope Sixtus V in 1593, when he was only 23 years old, and then Arch Bishop of Milan in April 1595. He followed the example of his elder cousin, San Carlo Borromeo in promoting the discipline of the clergy, founding churches and colleges at his own expense and applying everywhere the reformed principles laid down by the Council of Trent. He is most noted for his efforts to feed the poor of Milan during the Great Famine of 1627-28.
