Circle of OF BARON FRANÇOIS-PASCALSIMON GÉRARD, CALLED BARON GÉRARD AND STUDIO (Rome 1770 – 1837 Paris) “Portrait of a young lady, bust-length” Oil on canvas, 60 x 45 cm. £ 3,000-5,000 Catalogue note: François Gérard the son of the intendant of Cardinal de Bernis, was born in Rome in 1770. He moved to Paris with his family in 1782 and was admitted to the Pension du Roi, a school for young artists. He first studied under the sculptor Augustin Pajou and then painter Nicolas-Guy Brenet. In 1786, he began working in the studio of Jacques-Louis David where he met Antoine Gros, François-Xavier Fabre and Anne-Louis Girodet. He left Paris briefly for Rome in 1790 and by the time he returned, David had secured him a studio and lodgings at the Louvre. The 1790’s marked the start of Gérard’s ultimate success as a painter because of Napoleon’s loyal patronage from 1798 onwards. Gérard painted both the members of the ruling class and the aristocracy, such as Louis XVIII, Charles X and King Louis-Philippe.
