New York: Union Poster Service for Rebel Arts, ca. 1937 Cloth banner (35 3/8 x 22 5/8 in.; 895 x 573 mm) silk-screened in red, paper label of Union Poster Service affixed to verso; a few small abrasions, minor marginal fraying, but remarkably well preserved. The consignor has independently obtained a letter of authenticity from PSA that will accompany the lot. A powerful and startling anti-lynching image from the early period of the Civil Rights movement: the graphic shows a clenched hand holding a protest sign in front of a factory, "Stop Lynching," above the caption "Shame of America."The Rebel Arts Group, founded in New York City in 1934, was a leftist artists cooperative that supported various labor, socialist, and communist movements through the arts.Condition ReportCondition as described in catalogue entry.
