small 8vo, Arthur P. and Marion Johnstone Ford, 1905. Life in the Confederate Army and Some Experiences and Sketches. New York. Ford, a South Carolinian, a member of Manigault's Light Artillery battalion, provides his recollections of the war in this scarce volume, which according to manuscript annotations on the title page and flyleaf, belong to his cousin, Philip Prioleau. Prioleau, who in later life was apparently president of the Florida Citrus Association, and himself a veteran. Prioleau was active in the U.C.V., and collected reminiscences from fellow veterans living in Florida. Tipped into the book are typed letters from Priloeau, John Lengle (2nd Florida Infantry); William H. Sebring, Wood's Regiment, Missouri Cavalry; J.R. Miller, 1st Louisiana; H.H. Duncan Co. C, 45th Alabama; H.H. Love (probably 8th Florida);and E.L. Ferran. Each of these is signed by the author, and most include the obituary of the writer. Several are especially descriptive. Sebring, for example, writes of his epxeriences as a POW in St. Louis, and details his escape back to service in the Confederacy; Love writes of a humorous adventure surrounding an unexploded mortar shell; J.R. Miller, also captured, writes of his experiences at Point Lookout prison in Maryland. Provenance: Ex Kramer Gallery Condition: Spine shaken, hinges starting. Newsprint clippings and several letters brittle.
