CIVIL WAR]. EARLY, Jubal Anderson, Major General, C.S.A. Cabinet photograph signed ("J.A. Early"), 165 x 116mm., including gilt-edged mount . Good war-date image of Early in Confederate coat and overcoat, signed beneath image. See E.J. Warner, Generals in Gray , p.79. -- EARLY. Cabinet photograph signed twice ("J.A. Early"), by Washburn of New Orleans, 164 x 116mm., signed beneath image and inscribed by Early on back "J.A. Early, Lynchburg, Virginia, June 3rd 1892." Late image of seated Early, holding hat and cane, his hair and beard silver-gray. -- EARLY. Cabinet photograph signed ("J.A. Early"), 166 x 117mm., head and shoulder portrait of Early, balding, with flowing beard. -- EARLY. Autograph letter signed ("JA Early"), n.p., n.d. 1 page, 8vo. "I recognize only one of the photographs that is the largest one with the bald head. It was taken in Baltimore I send you one taken in New Orleans and which is a good likeness as I now am. I decline to add my rank to my autographs. That is a matter of history." -- EARLY. Inscription and signature ("JA Early"), Richmond, 5 November 1877. 1 page, small 4to. "Most truly your friend." Together 5 items. Early (1816-1894), although opposed to secession, joined the Confederate Army and fought at Manasses, Gettysburg, the Wilderness, and in the Shenandoah Valley, where he was defeated by Sheridan at Chambersburg, Fisher's Hill and Winchester, then virtually decimated by Custer at Waynesboro. He fled to Mexico but returned to practice law in Lynchburg, Virginia, after the war.
