[late 1864]. 4 3/16 x 2,1/2 in. including card mount, verso with the printed logo of "The 'Lee' Photographic Gallery," in Richmond, John W. Davies, prop. In mint condition. UN UNFLINCHING LEE, RICHMOND 1864. A fine war-date portrait of Lee by Richmond photographer J.W. Davies, showing the General, with an unflinching gaze, in his Confederate uniform, with three stars visible on the collar and a large gilt button on his jacket. "In this picture Lee had begun to trim his beard shorter than had been his wont earlier in the war...It will be recalled that Lee had worn a full beard for only three years...he seems to have come gradually to the habit of wearing it shorter...Throughout the rest of his life his beard will be seen much as it appears here." (Meredith, The Face of Robert E. Lee , p.30). Evidently this particular image was a particular favorite with the Lee family.
