Beschreibung:

Approximately 400 full Civil War and Patriotic covers mounted in a bound volume with a handmade cloth jacket. Approx. 7.5 x 12.5 in. The covers are mounted on front and back of the album pages. There are several categories, including: cartoons, patriotic themes (Liberty, flags, eagles, etc.), references to events (Ellsworth, the death of several other military men, the Merrimac and Monitor battle), Generals (Fremont, Scott, Grant, Lyons, Prentiss, Pope, Butler, Siegel, McClellan, etc.), many depict Zouaves - they were certainly a colorful crew, a few even have maps of the war (Chesapeake, Kentucky & Tennessee, Corinth, etc.). Most are approx. 3 x 5.5 in. A few of the covers are smaller: some are 2.25 in. wide rather than the more typical 3 in., and just a couple are as small as 2 x 4 in. There are quotes, including one from Steven Douglas, in part: "The slavery question is a mere excuse. The election of Mr. Lincoln is a mere pretext! The present Secession movement is the result of an enormous conspiracy formed more than a year since." Also several Bible quotes and one from Edward Everett Many short poems are printed on these. A number reference Major Anderson and Fort Sumter. Still more invoke historical figures such as George Washington ("A Southern Man with Union principles.") and Benjamin Franklin in the name of Union. There are also many symbols that are somewhat obscure today: cats, lions, donkeys, elephants, bulls, game cocks, hogs, and more. The first group shows Lincoln and Davis going 5 rounds. Another series has a cover for each state, with "The Loyal States" and the state seal lower left and Liberty leaning on the seal; and "The Rebel States," with the devil holding the state seal. These are in several colors: red, blue, orange, grey, purple, green. There are many configurations of flags, Liberty, Uncle Sam, shields, eagles, stars, etc. Most in red and blue ink. Zouave uniforms also often had red jackets and blue pants, so they are patriotic when put on these covers. Cartoons are generally a single color ink, but may be red or blue or purple or black. Overall an historically interesting collection and colorful as well. Condition: Pages are a bit frayed along the edges. Some toning and foxing, but minor, to covers. All covers unused.
