4pp, 7.75 x 12.25 in., Report of the sick of the 26th Regt., sent from the Hospital at Ship Island to the General Hospital. Jan. 30, 1862, Anson P. Hooker, Surgeon, 26th Regt. Born in 1932 in Cambridge, MA, Dr. Hooker enlisted in late summer, shortly after Congress authorized 500,000 volunteers (although the unit was not mustered into Federal service until October). The first two calls for troops had been relatively small, 75,000 in April and 42,000 in May. It was becoming clear that the war would not be quick - or easy, and the 100-day units would not be enough to put down the rebellion. This report lists 10 men, at least 9 of whom were eventually discharged for disability. There are some interesting comments about treatments here. Many of the neuralgia cases involved opiates and morphine in their treatment (he makes a distinction between the two even though morphine is an opiate). Henry Marston, neuralgia, could not tolerate any exposure to cold, discharged June 1862. Warren Mason, neuralgia "(for want of a better name)" had pain "up & down his spinal column," discharged Jan. 1863 at Boston, MA. Charles McLain (McLane), asthma, aphonia, "neuralgia of the chest," discharged Apr. 1862 at Ship Island. John Gosling (Goslin) - hernia, "cannot drill or do hard work;" discharged Sept. 1862. (Charles O.) Shedd - was hit on the head with the butt of a musket, out for a short time, but started showing subsequent convulsions, and some spicules of bone came away at different times. "His treatment has been expectant & great attention has been paid to his diet." Henry Blanchard - occasional delirium. He was on guard duty when rumors started circulating of an attack. As soon as he got off duty he was "suddenly seized with delirium of a hysteric nature,... since then he has had quite a number of similar attacks - He cannot be trusted with a loaded musket..." Discharged Oct. 1862. James Aiken (no company stated, and does not appear on the roster of the 26th MA) - scrofula - "The fort here has aggravated his disease and he is now unfit for any service here, mental or physical....Salt hog without vegetables of any kind is not conducive, particularly, to the cure of this disease." We assume he was discharged, though it is uncertain what unit he was in. George H. Brannum - Phthisis (tuberculosis); discharged Aprl. 1862 at Ship Island. Charles E. Edes - hernia; discharged Oct. 1862 at New Orleans. And as a postscript: Samuel D. Gay - Asthma. "He is unable to march any distance & cannot do 'double quick' at all." Condition: Folds, splits, and old tape at these. Some toning at folds.
