CIVIL WAR]. Revised United States Army Regulations, of 1861. With an Appendix Containing the Changes and Laws Affecting Army regulations and Articles of War to June 25, 1863 . Philadelphia: George W. Childs, 1863. 8 o (210 x 128 mm). Original blue blindstamped cloth, gilt-lettered on spine. Provenance : Benjamin H. Lane (bookplate). A VIRTUALLY UNTOUCHED COPY. Revised and published two weeks before the Battle of Gettysburg. Procedures and regulations determined to be necessary since the original edition of 1861 are incorporated here. The provisions concerning Army organization and tactics were archaic in most cases despite efforts in 1857 by then Secretary of the Army Jefferson Davis to update the Regulations to reflect the experience of the Mexican War. During the Civil War the Regulations would be slightly modified to incorporate the military laws passed by two wartime Congresses. Another edition of the same year was issued in Washington, D.C. by the Government Printing Office. POORE, Benjamin Perley, editor. Born in Waynesborough, Pennsylvania, Reverend Michael Jacobs moved to Gettysburg. The present text provides his recollections as an observer. Morrison's Stranger's Guide and Etiquette, for the Washington City and its Vicinity . Washington, D.C.: W.H. & O.H. Morrison, 1862. 12 o (132 x 95 mm).
