CLAUDE CAHUN AND LISE DEHARME (author) Le Coeur de pic -- The Heart of Spades . Paris: José Corti, 1937. Quarto (269 x 215 mm). 20 black and white photographs. Original color printed boards and green cloth spine (extremities rubbed); cloth folding box. Provenance : Adrienne Monnier (inscription from Deharme in purple ink). FIRST EDITION. AN EXCELLENT ASSOCIATION COPY OF ONE OF THE BEST SURREALIST PHOTOBOOKS, inscribed by Deharme to a central figure in literary Paris: "Pour Mademoiselle Adrienne Monnier avec une sympathie qui date de loin Lise Deharme". Monnier's Maison des amis des Lettres was, like Sylvia Beach's Shakespeare & Co, a landmark venue which attracted Breton, Joyce, Eliot, Gide, Aragon and many others. Monnier, published the French translation of Joyce's Ulysses , and important literary reviews which did a great deal to introduce American writing to French readers. The Photobook , vol. I, p.108 ("French Surrealist children must be made of sterner stuff than ordinary kids").
