Claudius sends 30 copies [perhaps of part V of Asmus omnia sua secum portans oder Sämmtliche Werke des Wandsbecker Bothen , published that year], and has put aside a 31st, if one is damaged in transit; they are delighted with a trainee teacher, Herr Zetteler, who has paid for the copies: 'Dieser Herr Zetteler gefällt uns nicht übel, und wir speigeln uns an seiner Bescheidenheit, Mäßigkeit pp. Gott erhalte ihn dabey -- denn es ist viel oft schwere dergleichen zu bleiben als zu seyn -- so kann ein guter Erzieher aus ihm werden. Aber wir haben lachen müßen, daß seine Eleven zum Theil erst gebohren werden sollen. Der Graf Tupper macht es sans Comparaison wie der liebe Gott, der seine Kinder liebt und sorgt schon ehe sie sind'. Matthias Claudius's collected works were published under his pen name of 'Asmus'. His many poems and prose works in a variety of moods from burlesque to solemn piety are characterised by a simple, unardorned style.
