Autograph letter signed ("G Clymer") TO BENJAMIN RUSH, New York, 12 August 1789. 1 full page, 4to , integral address leaf (separated) in Clymer's hand, and with CLYMER'S AUTOGRAPH FREE FRANK: ("Free G. "I WILL NEVER SUFFER MYSELF IN ANY PUBLICK DUTY OF TRUST OR HONOR TO BE CONTROLLED BY THE RAGE, IGNORANCE OF FOLLY OF MY CONSTITUENTS" Strong words from Clymer, a Pennsylvania Representative under the new Constitution, attending the First Congress in New York. He comments forcefully to Rush, in Philadelphia, on a matter then under discussion in Congress: "Mr Fitzsimmons has this moment shewn me your letter containing the present state of opinion respecting the conduct of Congress and its members on the affair of the salaries and wages. This will have no effect on me nor do I care should it be proclaimed on the house top that I will never suffer myself in any publick duty of trust or honor to be controlled by the rage, ignorance of folly of my constituents." Clymer, a successful Philadelphia merchant, served in the Continental Congress as well as the 1787 Constitutional Convention. In the First Congress he served as Chairman of the Committee on Elections.
