This pair of fine dress spurs were formerly owned by Major General Francis Jay Herron, an 1893 Congressional Medal of Honor Recipient for his bravery and heroism during the Civil War. The spurs feature applied gold floral rosettes and are engraved "MAJ. GEN'L. F. J. HERRON" in script, are otherwise unmarked. They are in very fine condition overall with light in-use wear and tarnish. Francis Jay Herron, born Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, 1837, died New York City, 1902. Francis Jay Herron was known for his heroism at the Battle of Pea Ridge, Arkansas, March 7th, 1862. His regiment repulsed the Confederate army's advance, but suffered 218 casualties in the battle. For this engagement, Congress awarded him the Medal of Honor in 1893. On March 10th, 1863, he was appointed Major General, not long after he had taken command of the 3rd Division of the Union Army of the Frontier in October, 1863. On December 7th, Herron's forces engaged the Confederate forces about to defeat Brigadier General James G. Blunt at the Battle of Prairies Cove, Washington County, Arkansas. This was a 10 hour battle where both sides lost more than 10% of their forces. As Major General, he commanded a division at the Siege of Vicksburg. After the cessation of hostilities of the Civil War, he became an attorney and moved to New York City. Item Dimensions: 5 - 1/2" x 3 - 1/4".
