"I HAVE NOT RECEIVED YOUR CATALOGUE" "As I have not received your Catalogue, which I left behind me in the Country House, I fear that you may not have received my Letters, with the various orders etc. -- I write now to beg that, should you receive this Note in time, you will bring up with you to Hamstead if you return thither this evening, all the works, you may have of Ludwig Tieck [1773-1853, a German writer known for his romantic tales and his concept of "romantic irony"]: and if you will send a Lad over with them to Highgate, I will give him a shilling for his Trouble. -- At the same time I should be very glad to look at Adelung's Mithradates -- and if the same Lad could bring it over, I would not detain him above an hour, and if I did not keep the Book, I would return it by him -- but pray be so good as not to forget your Catalogue. "I passed a most delightful Evening with Mr L. Tieck yesterday...It would be very desirable, if the first Meeting of the Friends of German Literature could take place while he is in Town. He might very probably mention it with honor, in his writings, after his return -- and this would give a respectability to such an Institution...in addition to my former orders be so good as to add 1. Schelling's 'Welt-Altern', if it be published. 2. H. Steffens' last work, the title of which I could not learn. (But Mr B. [Thomas Boosey, Jr.] has a list of all Schelling's & Steffens's works that I already possess; and a general order to purchase whatever of these Authors is not included in that list.)...An old Gentleman took the liberty of putting the two numbers of Anim. Magn. [Animal Magnetism?] Magazine in his pocket without my knowledge & returned them so tattered in the covers that I have had them half-bound in one volume, & will send them back by the Lad tomorrow, should you send one. -- A House-mate of our's here at Highgate purchased the two numbers at a Sale on Monday last for one Shilling !...This is what I wish to do with the [Gespenster-Buch?] -- have the volumes neatly half-bound -- and then exchange them for some other Books at the Catalogue Prices." With typed transcript. Letters , ed. E.L. Griggs, IV, 737. (Milne)
