Title: Collection of approximately 100 American lottery tickets from the 18th and 19th centuries, plus related letters & ephemera Author: ** Place: Various places Publisher: Date: 1758-1890 Description: Neatly housed in large white three-ring binder, loose in plastic sleeves with printed legends for the more significant examples. With slipcase. Important collection of lottery tickets ranging from an example of the May 1758 Massachusetts Lottery (to help pay for the French & Indian War); the 1758 lottery to pay for a bridge over the Saco and Penobscot Rivers in present Maine; 1772 Delaware ticket signed by William Alexander Lord Stirling, American general in Revolution; 1773 Pettie's Island, Pennsylvania ticket to raise money for "some Pious and Charitable uses"; United States Lottery Fourth Class ticket signed by George Campbell c.1778; a Third Class ticket of the same signed by John Mease; 1786 Massachusetts Land-Lottery; Rhode Island Pavement Lottery, 1768; 1761 Conestogoe Bridge Lottery, Pennsylvania (printed by Benjamin Franklin ; 1761 Lancaster School Lottery (also printed by Franklin); 1761 Massachusetts-Bay for the rebuilding of Faneuil Hall; two 1783 Washington Hotel Lottery tickets signed by Sam Blodgett, early promoter of the new city; 5 Washington City Canal, c.1800; etc. etc. There are also letters from the 19th century relating to lotteries, and some other ephemeral pieces including a rare 1780 bond to fund the Massachusetts lottery. 13 of the tickets date from 1758-1780; 21 are from 1781-1800; about 20 from 1801-1820; the rest later. A truly exceptional collection. Lot Amendments Condition: Generally in very good to fine condition. Item number: 211433
